Kelembad
One of the final twelve realms to be destroyed in the Vampyric Wars.
A mountainous and hazard-filled landscape dominated by the range of the Howling Mountains, the Kelembadians were a fierce, hard, yet musical people. Suriviving in the harsh climate of their volcanoe-rich lands quickly killed any but the hardiest, or most rhythmic.
Thus, when the nomadic tribes started to settle towards building up a greater civilization and eventually become the nation known as Kelembad (before it was destroyed in the Vampyric Wars), two characteristics were chosen amongst the pair that they would have to lead them.
For a Queen they demanded the most physically fit fighting machine. For a King the most sonorous tune-smith. Each was decided in the Clashathon held every twenty years in order to determine their leaders for the next two decades. At the Clashathon a pair of Man and Woman would compete against other pairs in a duet of sword and zither, blade and drum, axe and mandolin. Whichever pair was able to survive the assault of the other pairs, as well as please the crowd with their melodies, was crowned High King and High Queen of Kelembad.
Maintaining this tradition over the generations helped immensely during the Vampyric Wars, as teams of husband and wife, "battlebards", were a fantastic asset against the Vampyre's legion of Torvolds, a beast whose only weakness is to be attack while listening to good music.
Kelembad was decimated in the Last Battle of the Vampyric Wars in year 1,003 (TMSK). The region was referred to as Shattered Kelembad for the next 2,510 years, until in year 3,513 (TMSK), when the region, as well as the northern Ruins of Blee were formed into the First United Republic of Terle.
Tales of this region after the Vampyric Wars are told in The Lost Tales of Shattered Kelembad.

Discussion
I still remember the winning chant from the Clashathon depicted in the Starlight Runewar graphic novel. "And how they sang.. and how they fought.. and sword clash rang.. and crowds thunder raught." Ah... Memories. -tim |
