Gears

A lengthy article appeared in ELotH:TES Magazine, Issue 11, which outlined the details of the Elemental spells of the High Elemenstor, known as Gears, which are not cast, but struck. The article begins thusly:

So I'm sure that many have read the ELotH:TES novels and seen passages like "Noddy struck the bassal Earth gear, Landslide, and the three Swinemen were instantly crushed under a tidalwave of rock and mud." and you wondered, "What exactly is a Bassal Earth Gear?" Well the fine staff here at ELotH:TES Magazine have picked through all the canonical source material and are here to answer that question, and more.

Gears are divided into three strata.

Stratum 1: Parsum -- A simple conjuration of Elements, first to be learned, first to be mastered.

Stratum 2: Genisum -- An intermediate level Gear, often struck by less experienced Elemenstors with the use of some sort of material focus, such as an Elemenstave. Usually causes an Elemental to manifest in a faint outline or to briefly appear with a transparent body.

Stratum 3: Bassal -- The defining ability of a truly gifted High Elemenstor. Each Bassal Gear can take years to learn, and longer to master. Requires that an Elemental physically manifest.

Note that Elemanifestations do not belong to this category, although Elemanifestations manifest halfway for Genisum Gears in order to execute the Elemenstor's gear. For a Bassal an Elemanifestations must be summoned to manifest physical form. Some very experienced Elemenstors strike gears in an entirely Elemanifestations free way, but as previously stated, this makes the Elemanifestations very lonely.

Elemenstors have described when they successfully strike a gear they hear a TONG! sound inside their head. The sound of failure is said to be reminiscent of a fart.

I have just the first page of this article ripped out and posted on the bulletin board next to my computer. Anybody with access to the whole article should list some of the gears from the article. I remember that there were a few gears from each stratum for each of the primary elements... can't remember if it went into the dark gears or the minor elements... Thanks! -Tim
