Wolfgang Apprentice
The main character of The Journey of Wolfgang Apprentice.
An orphan living in the sleepy Dim Elf Lands, adopted by Wasted Elemenstor Nilfrem when he showed signs of the Knack. Nilfrem did little to actually teach Wolfgang of Elemenstation, choosing instead to use the boy to bring beer tankards to himself and his constant drinking companion Behn.
I looked in the mirror hanging on the wall across the hall and I observed that I looked even more disheveled than I felt. My outfit was typical. I was wearing a beat-up brown tunic and a ragged tan cloak over it. My hair was so messy that a family of turkey vultures could have lived there in moderate comfort.
Dreams of epicness seemed forever out of reach and the thrilling stories retold by Tammy the Chair, Nilfrem's Furniliar do little to raise his spirits. When Nilfrem hires Casey Vandershroud as a replacement apprentice (Wolfgang is much to valuable as a beer tankard fetcher to be wasting his time with Elemenstation) Wolfgang meets a kindred spirit. Casey, disappointed with her lack of success in "the real world" after excelling at the Cerulean Citadel, brings Wolfgang into her circle of friends who are all pretty much failures.
Seeking to better their lot in life by testing their mettle through adventure, Wolfgang, Casey, Jack Joyless, and ultimately Behn, set off to join the Unlight War. Tammy the Chair tags along for parts of the adventure, but also goes off and has her own adventures and as such is missing for large sections of the book.
On his adventures, Wolfgang learns of his true family and is drawn into a life of excess and wenches that drives a wedge between himself and the band of companions with whom he had been travelling. By the end of the book, he realizes that his life is hollow, not fulfilled by material possessions, when he hears that Casey has been wounded on the battle fields of the Unlight War. Joining a battallion of Fighting Magicians, he goes out to meet his destiny, unafraid of what he may encounter, and determined to find Casey and tell her that he loves her.
