The War Men's Day Off (戦争人の休日!)

ElamenSTAR, Episode 122

Aired 1st November 1996

Summary

Lander, Zula, and Phila find Wendel struggling to open a magic puzzlebox. He explains that there is a monk in the woods who will teach him the "Sound of Ondori" technique of Elemenstation if he can successfully open the box.

But the episode mostly revolves around the rogue (and, lately, absent) War Men, Warchief Bogg, Nakurusu, and Tosuti on their ambitious but ill-planned fishing trip. Spliced throughout the episode are brief interludes chronicalling Lander, Zula, Wendel, and Phila trying to open the puzzlebox. It's fun and refreshing to see the War Men outside of their single minded plotting, and in particular one scene gives great insight into the interior life of Nakurusu, who, it turns out, is merely unable to articulate what appears to be a fairly in depth grasp on his surroundings.

At the end of the episode it turns out to be a boot that they were struggling to land and the Wizbits kids "kick it into overgear" on the puzzle box, which opens to reveal.... a fish. Everyone stands around laughing as the camera pans up into the sky and then to black.

Notes

With the exception of a few of Nakurusu's characteristic homosexual overtures toward Tosuti (and Tosuti's needlessly violent responses), this charming episode made it to the United States largely uncut. The meandering, "zen" approach to setting, plot, and pacing provided a surprisingly witty and aesthetically fluid offering for what was generally touted as a high-powered, over-sexed, ultra-violent cartoon for adolescents.
