The Violation of Law 488

by Argon Fugate

A short story serialized across several issues of ELotH:TES Magazine, set during the Century of Fire.

Experiments by Char Reyarteb, and his War Men Elemenstors resulted in the violation of Law 488, and created items of unimaginable might and unpredictability.

It is into this setting that Vern Al-Equaanax, low-tertiary petty-enforcer of the Item Law Makers Guild, makes his appearance. Tasks with investigating the rumors and punishing any violations, Vern dutifully sets about his task.

Using an array of Item Law Makers Guild gadgets and magic subduing anti-spell enchantments, Vern is able track down and destroy many war man possessed items. Usually one per magazine issue, although the Club of Enraged Spontaneous Fire notably took 3 issues.

A list of items (referred to as The 488s):

  • Club of Enraged Spontaneous Fire
  • Glass Orb of Great and Sudden Velocity and Unbreakability
  • Hat of Blood from Every Oraface
  • The Axe of Unmatched Sharp and Mighty Quaking
  • Gauntlets of Giant Strength, Razor Claws, and Uncontrolled Itching

Notes of Interest

  • This is one of the few stories where the law enforcers of the Item Law Makers Guild are shown in a sympathetic and positive light.
  • Low-Tertiary Petty-Enforcer Vern Al-Equaanax has a "motivational poster" of The Bravery of the Doomed hanging in his office.
