The Sound of Ondori (...オンドリの騒音)

ElamenSTAR, Episode 121

Aired 25th October 1996

Summary

Lander and Zula find Phila crying outside the walls of an unnamed city. When she sees her friends she explains that her powers of Elemenstation were insufficient to get her to Mount Wor, and so she went looking for someone to teach her more about her rubian. Though the people of Parsonya say there is a school nearby, Phila has been unable to find it. She has, however, heard that there is a very powerful technique which cannot be learned at the school, but is taught by a monk who lives nearby... who she also has been unable to find.

With some empty encouragement and feigned compassion, Lander and Zula persuade Phila to rejoin them, suggesting that where each had failed individually, they might together succeed. "Well, as long as we don't let that mean old Wendel join us..." Phila ventures. The other two Wizbits laugh noncommitally as the scene fades.

Notes

Based on the geography of Mount Wor and its proximity to The Kingdom of Parsonya, it is likely that the "school" Phila is looking for is in fact the Grimm Elemenstati Akademia. Ironically, the Akademia is where Lander is sent as a young child--after the Brainmanglement Elemenstation and timesorc'ley that takes place at the end of ElamenSTAR.

For the most part this episode is one long, drawn out pity-party for the dreadfully codependent Phila, who fishes for compliments and engages in shamefully overwrought emotional self-flagellation. Widely reviled as one of the least interesting episodes, though it does introduce the concept of a powerful Elemenstation technique known as the "Sound of Ondori." Consequently, the American reimagining of this episode is perhaps the only time in The Wizbits Cartoon when the addition of Doodle actually improved things.

Hey, well, they can't all be masterpieces, right? ~Kenneth Pike
I'm not sure how making a sound like a chicken through the use of Earth gears is a powerful Elemenstation technique. Anybody want to clear this one up? -tim
It's the proper name of the Elemenstation which is in fact the *whirrr* sound used against MooMaa in later episodes. It didn't make any sense to me, either, but apparently "ondori" can be used to refer to roosters specifically rather than just chicken generally. The sound a rooster makes is usually represented in Japanese as "kokekokkoo"... how you get to *whirrr* from there is more a trick of onomateopia and Americanization than anything else. Also note that for some reason 雄鶏 is rendered in the episode's title in katakana, which I believe is a clue to the idea that it's not a rooster we're talking about, at least not in the conventional sense of the word. (Alternatively, it might be a translational error by someone who didn't know the kanji, but I've never seen the title written that way.)

I think what the monk tells them is "雄鶏が時をつくる声は鬼にとって致命的である" which roughly translates to "The sound of a rooster's crowing is fatal to the ogre/demon." (Presumably "Oni" here refers generally to creatures of evil?) The implication of course that just like the rooster "wakes the sun," this technique is used to bring light into darkness.

I know it's a little confusing but let's face it, in the world of Battal this is actually one of the more simple things to grasp. Ever try to play Wizbits Elemenstor Battle? d^_^b Hope this helps. ~Kenneth Pike

P.S. Who said anything about Earth gears? Did I miss something? I'm afraid I am not as well-versed in Elemenstation and gears as I ought to be, but I seem to remember all of the Wizbits making use of the "Sound of Ondori" against MooMaa. Does it have an elemental association?
It was Lander who first learned the technique, so I assumed it had earth connotations (which it may)... Generally I believe that Elemenstors can learn gears from any school, altgh generally they don't. In the Cerulean Citadel, each element is taught (at least the basics) to all students). -tim
Ah! That would explain it. The cartoon (for obvious reasons) doesn't often bother with the details behind the various advances in power made by the Four Underdogs--they just find an artifact or visit a monk and bam new power. Maybe I need to go back and read the books again! But first I need to finish this episode guide d-_-b. ~Kenneth Pike
Interesting that it's the sound of the "Rooster Crowing" that would hurt MooMaa so badly, don'tcha think? That's the same thing that was supposed to hurt the Cockatrice of legend, as I recall. I wonder if there's some sort of Cockatrice association with MooMaa? -Shadowtext
Indeed, if you check the version history of this page (if it's still all here) you'll see that the first time I wrote down the Monk's quote, I wrote Cockatrice instead of Oni. I was going off of a transcript, but as I watched the episode what the Monk actually says is Oni. No way now of knowing if it was a mistake, or if "Cockatrice" was deemed too metaphorical, or maybe my transcript isn't genuine... but yes, I thought it was an interesting connection and I'm sorry the allegory didn't make it into the American version! ~Kenneth Pike
Yeah, I forgot all about that aspect of MooMaa (and Cockatrices).. This is probably information that should go into MooMaa's entry... also it explains the stone menagerie in garver crypt. -tim
