Solbane and Flariax

"So, the death ray is the more square-ish button, right?" -Flariax

Solbane and Flariax are a pair of humorously murderous aliens who attack Wangokyo in Episode 7 of Ken Nordris's ELotH (kinda) fan-comic, Megawangokyo. In the episode, they attack simply because they "haven't 'sploded a city in over a week-o-cycle." (Solbane and Flariax use a time measurement system in which a week equals a week-o-cycle, a day equals a day-o-cycle, a year equals a year-o-cycle and so on.) They are, in essence, pure id, in that they act solely on impulse and the desire to do things that interest them. Though they pilot a highly advanced ship, they themselves don't seem particularly intelligent, frequently forgetting certain functions of their own ship controls.

Fan Reaction

From their original appearance through their entire run in episode 7 of Megawangokyo, fans simply couldn't get enough of those two murderous extra-terrestrials. They provided some of the most memorable Megawangokyo quotes to date (such as the infamous "Well...I have legs!" quote from Solbane which is still commonly used on the MW forum). When the two finally retreated in an escape pod at the end of the episode, fans naturally hoped they would, one day, return.

Ken Nordris, however, saw things differently. His feelings are perhaps best summed up in a minor rant he did on the two characters in an interview at Nerdculturecon 2005:

"Ugh, everyone asks me 'When are you gonna bring the aliens back? I want the aliens. Waah waah waaaah!' Look, let me just make it clear right now, those two alien characters...what were their names? Oh, whatever. Anyway, they aren't coming back. Not now, not ever. Like, they were funny once, maybe, but I certainly don't think they're worth revisiting. I...yeah, I laughed when I created them, but then I just wanted to get it over with and do something...you know...good. So stop asking. They're gone. Dead. Got it?" -Ken Nordris

Fans were, obviously, crushed that these great characters had been dropped. Years later, Ken Nordris has remained strong despite numerous requests, online petitions, and even death threats to have the characters return.

Some fans have gone so far as to write their own Solbane and Flariax comics and fiction. Surprisingly, these are often more clever and well-written that Megawangokyo itself.
