Penny Farthing

Penny Farthing is the character in The Wizbits based on a young Myrtle Breakwind. In ElamenSTAR this character is named Phila.

Background

From the Village of E'Lylin, the tuba-playing Penny had little thoughts of adventuring. As a member of the ceremonial marching band, Penny's duties on the Day of Choice were inconsequential: provide music to accompany the anticipated anointing of the Rubian of Water out of the ribbons of kelp that rose from deep within a salt-water well to reach a hundred feet into the air over E'Lylin's square. No one was more surprised than Penny when the sea-green pod fell from the heights of the kelp forest to lodge itself in her tuba's bell, cracking to reveal the swimming, azure depths of the rubian.

On the Show

Penny was clearly intended to be the comic relief of the show, though she gained some depth by the end of the series. Since she never thought she had the Knack, she lacks confidence in her abilities, sometimes severely botching her spells. She overcompensates for this with a bossy and boastful attitude, especially towards Skip. Most fans agree that her one-sided arguments with Myrtle, her familiar, were often the funniest part of the show.

In later episodes, Penny becomes a more sympathetic character, as we learn how much she struggles to live up to the high expectations of her family and friends. This led to a sort of schism between fans who liked the new, more emotionally developed Penny, and fans that preferred the old "funny" Penny.

Penny's Familiar: Myrtle, a spotted, Gnarled Land Squid.

Many believe that the web-comic Penny Arcade is named after Penny Farthing, although the creators deny this, they have done so as fictionalised drawings of themselves and how far can you really trust a cartoon?

Zeta I wondered about this ever since I saw an episode, but never heard it explained by anyone - what the hell is that thing floating over her head? A hat? A halo? Some sort of living creature? An aquaberet?! It's the biggest mystery in the whole franchise to me.
bfg00 I'm not sure either. I think it is a manifestation of hear Water powers.
Kenneth Pike I think it was sometime in the 3rd Season of ElamenSTAR that Blunder actually snatches it and wears it for a while as one of his many hats (I should probably go back and figure out which episode and add it to the guide). This is the only direct reference to the "water halo" in the series that I am aware of, as sort of an "in joke" for fans (implying that yes, it's just a freaky hat). The few times you see Phila actually laying down sleeping the halo is just not there--it appears when she stands up.

In many ways the water halo is a lot like Zula's wings--why does she have wings? She's human, her village is human, her parents are human. But when she gets her rubian, she gets wings. So in that way, the halo is also a manifestation of Phila's powers.

Shortest answer available: the designers just did it that way. Go figure.
bfg00 That makes sense, but I wonder if it is a hat does it possess any special powers? And who would make such a crazy hat?
