Back to Feasts and Holidays

Octovigil

Octovigil is an eight-day long Shushipodian festival celebrating the god Shaurit'ahj. According to legend, Krakibdus trapped the first Shushipodians in the depths of an underwater cavern filled with ravenous monsters.

Shaurit'ahj gave the Shushipodians eight Glowing Starfish, that kept the monsters at bay and allowed them to survive until they escaped.

Aspects of the Holiday

Prayers are made to Shaurit'ahj, and reading of the Shushipodian holy texts is encouraged.

Every day, a Shushipodian family is supposed to go out and catch a single Glowing Starfish and place it into a lantern until every family has eight lanterns lit. Deepfried kelp cakes, a holy food of the holiday are served en-masse.

Shushipodian children play a simple game called Shtarshel, which features a spinning toy starfish. Occasionally small gifts of money, candy, and food are given to children.

Commercialization

As Socknight becomes more popular on dry land, Octovigil has spread amongst many of the aquatic races of Battal, such as the Dolphinthropes. This has led many deviout followers of Shaurit'ahj to complain about their holiday being watered-down to compete with one popular amongst the land-dwellers.
