Mongus the Fortress

Like the rest of the Dark Four, there is very little background on Mongus, an enormous and startlingly stupid human who is seemingly impervious to pain (some say he is a half-giant or perhaps a tall man in a Spiffy Cap, but this seems unlikely, despite the plain spiffiness of Mongus' headwear). It is known that he spent some time as an Apostrophine Miner, which at least partially explains his enormous size and strength. He was taken from the mines and pressed into service as a Clown in a traveling freakshow (they mostly dropped him from high places or inflicted fleshwounds to demonstrate the virtues of his underdeveloped nervous system), where he was eventually recruited by Mendus the Mind.

Probably his most popular appearance was in the macabre chibi short that aired at the end of ElamenSTAR Episode 211. He gets a Zilly Rabbit for Welcome Day and promptly places it in his pocket. Later, he can't get it to wake up.

MENDUS: "What's wrong now, you lumbering oaf?"

MONGUS: "I was just petting 'im, and pretty soon he bit my finger and I pinched his head a little and then he's dead."

MENDUS: "Why don't you remember things? I told you, don't put things in your pockets, Mongus, especially the things you want to keep alive. One of these days I'm going to break your neck, and it will be a mercy, I swear to the Dark."

In addition to being incredibly strong and impervious to pain, whenever Mongus' appearance in ElamenSTAR did not involve a battle, he was invariably eating something--usually Roast Cat With Basil, Mantok Peppers, or whole Great Iceberg Lettuce (though rarely a head larger than a horsecart). One bit of fan-service, never explained but well-understood by viewers whose foray into Battal extended beyond ElamenSTAR, was the book Mongus carried chained to his belt. It is a worn second-edition copy of Mother Nancy's Fancy Cookbook. Because it seems clear that Mongus could not read--indeed, he could barely talk--knowledge of the book's contents help to explain why he is persistently thrusting it in Mendus' direction with a plaintive grunt. It is believed by most fans that this is how Mendus secured the loyalty of Mongus; by cooking Mongus' favorite meals and reading him the accompanying bedtime story.

At any rate, Mongus' loyalty was ultimately rewarded with a special Mayumi-trademarked stabfest to the neck with a rusty dagger. Sympathetic viewers can take solace in the fact that, as he bled to death at the feet of the mighty Erlenminster, Mongus probably didn't feel a thing.

Discussion

Was this guy really a Clown?
Well he definitely worked with Clowns, but I don't know if he participated in "all" parts of being a Clown. -bfg00
