Merrigold

Founded: -42,132 (TH)

Destroyed: -19,873 (TH)

An ancient Nevelost city founded before the arrival of Men or even Elves in the land of Battal. Initially consisted of a small guild hall, an inn, and several mudwork thatch pile dwellings (called Dweel Mounds) that are the old traditional style homes of Nevelost. Largely the Nevelost wandered the lands, and though many passed through this village, there were few permanent residents for indeed there were few of that race that stayed in one place for long in those days. Still, ever since the ravages of the War of the Encients, the Nevelost held a place in the Mysterwoods of the Northern Vale called the Grove of Merrigold as most sacred, and had a tendency to linger there. Dweel Mounds tended to accumulate in the area, and the scent of lavender and hollyhock pervaded the woods.

By the year -27,998 and the world was older and less exciting to that race they began to yearn for a place they might call home. Mollpontius of the Nevelost was the first to decree that Merrigold would be the capital of the Nevelost, and began construction of a large keep and great master craft guild halls, as well as giant shining whitewash pavilions lit by starry lanterns in which much song, dance and festivity was seen. The vision of Mollpontius and his band of first friends as he called the founders, turned the village into a great city, to which the Nevelost kin flocked. By year -26,430 the city was a prosperous center of art and craft. It was in this year when digging the deep foundations of the Songweavers Guild that they struck a vein of Silverstone, which they began to mine.

During this prosperous period, Elves began to be drawn to the beauty and grandeur of the city as well. They intermarried with the Nevelost, producing the beautiful children known as the Nevelves, who would later become known as the Beach Elves, although they are not truly elves.

So time passed and the city grew greater and greater, and the Silverstone mines delved deeper and deeper. Few know exactly what happened that started the raging great fire of -19,873 known as the First Great Tragedy of the Nevelost, but it burned mercilessly, and drove the Nevelost before it without mercy or abatement. Most fled down into the mines, where already there were great subterrainian dwellings for the miners and their families, and a community of tradesmen who supported them.

After the fire, there was little effort made to rebuild because the underkingdom was large and elaborate, and quite hospitable. The above ground was slowly converted into a large and beautiful garden and park area where the Nevelost would some times wander when they desired the taste of sun on their brow.

Unfortunately, the great entrance to the silverstone mines, and the underkingdom collapsed in the year -19,232 in what was known as the Second Great Tragedy of the Nevelost. The kingdom was sealed away for a long, long time.
