Final Battle Four: The Myrkmoom Menace (Part 2) (第四最後の決戦:マークムーマメナス(後半))

Super ElamenSTAR Episode 413

Aired 9th June, 2000

Summary

Phila has been kidnapped by Kapybara and taken to Myrkmoom! But what could the Dark Elemenstrix be after?

The episode begins with Zula and Lander trying to figure out how to get to Myrkmoom, a task no two ancient texts seem to agree upon. It is definitely the home of Dyemons, Elemonstrosities and the nefarious Myrkmoomin, but some say it exists inside a dimensional bubble between the planes of Elmether while others claim it is in fact one of the Nastier Planes.

Back in Myrkmoom, Kapybara oscillates violently between sultry seductress and sadistic monster. She claims that a battle is coming, a great battle. One moment she is caressing Phila like a lover, the next she is screaming and pounding her fists against the Grand Elemenstor of water. Though clearly frightened, Phila carefully evaluates her options and tries to ascertain what it is that Kapybara wants from her.

"Are you stealing my Wand?" she asks, earning a punch to the face. Later she asks, "Is there information you need from me?" which gets her switched bloody. Later still, she says, "Are you trying to turn me to Dark Elemenstation?" This earns her a smoldering glare, a gentle kiss, and a savage kick in the stomach.

These torture sessions are occasionally interrupted by scenes back at the Cerulean Citadel, where Zula and Lander strike a number of humorously unsuccessful gears as they try to enter Myrkmoom.

As Phila struggles to escape captivity, Kapybara slowly reveals some of her past. Like the Four Underdogs, she has since her youth heard the voice of Harbinger Portent--but also another voice, that of Char Reyarteb. She has never met either man (that she knows of) and (again unlike the Underdogs) the voices do not speak directly to her--it is as though she is through some fluke connection occasionally privy to their thoughts.

As a child, Kapybara supposed these voices to be the commands of the Hierarchs, but they were often conflicting. Later she would use information gained in her occasional "visitations" to further her own ends, at last finding her way to Myrkmoom where she found that the voices speaking to her fell silent so long as she remained in the strange no-place. There she gained a modicum of control over the Myrkmoomin and established her home. She was only 15 years old when she first arrived, and already a powerful Dark Elemenstrix.

During one of her flashes of eerie compassion, Phila takes a chance and siezes her wand, destroying her bonds and immediately entering into combat with Kapybara.

"You're not leaving me again!" Kapybara shrieks. Her formidable power proves an even match for the wounded Phila, despite the additional power of the Water Wand.

When it appears that Kapybara and Phila have reached a stalemate, Zula and Lander appear. This enrages Kapybara, who redoubles her assault. Rather than striking gears, however, Kapybara commences attacking the three Grand Elemenstors with the very essence of Myrkmoom, manifesting Dyemons and Myrkmoomin seemingly out of thin air.

Just as the three are about to be overwhelmed--not by the power, but by the sheer unfathomable number of foes coming at them, an enormous flame erupts in the middle of the room. Wendel steps through a flaming portal and lays waste to the encroaching horde of dark beasties.

"Wendel!" cries Phila. "You do care!"

"No, I dont!" he says with an almost undetectable grin. "Now Let's go!" he shouts over the roars of injured Myrkmoomin, and the other three follow him through his portal, back to the Cerulean Citadel.

As the portal closes, Kapybara's mournful voice is heard. "Don't leave me... my love..."

Wendel, Zula, and Lander look shocked and stare at Phila, who shrugs. "That back there is one crazy bitch."

The closing scene is a brief look back at Kapybara, weeping bitterly. She screams in anger, then abruptly stops, wipes her tears, and turns to an enormous pile of rusting bathtubs. She begins to whistle and strikes a gear just as the closing credits roll.

Notes

When this episode was to be initially aired it was preempted to cover a televised national address. The episode was not rebroadcast until June of 2000, shortly before the premiere of the next season. Fans were in an uproar, including pickets both in front of television studios and in front of series director Tomono Shuuan's opulant estate made national news. The associated press coverage for the broadcast provided a boost of advertising revenue that provided the studio with the final money that it needed in order to complete the work on what would be the final season of ElamenSTAR which even at this late date was not yet completed.

It is not known if this episode was intended to forshadow the ultimate culmination of Kaybara's storyline or if Tycho Brahe(?) took the bathtub reference included here as inspiration for the character's story arc in Book 11 (which was released the following year).
