Elim

See Also: Astrolonomy

A standard Battal year changes in a complicated pattern as Battal moves about its sun in an eccentric orbit. The shorter years (referred to as Slippery Years) gradually lengthen into longer years (referred to as Scratchy Years) and back into shorter years. The entire cycle lasts 33 Battal years, and then repeats.

Similarly, Battal's rotation on its axis changes in a pseudo-periodic cycle throughout the course of a year. Some days don't just seem longer... they literally are longer. However, a Battal day is always divided into 400 Elim. This means Elim last different amounts of time every day. Technically, an Elim is also a variable measure of distance, as it can refer to the distance covered by Battal over anywhere from 1/70000th to 1/253500th of its orbit.

It is also known that periods of High Elemenstation activity also change the length of a Battal day, and hence the duration of an Elim.

The cycle of Battal's rotation rate (from quick to slow and back to quick) takes different amounts of time to complete, but because of the complexity of the system and the fact that time units are highly variable, no one knows quite how to measure the entire system.

In the end, most beings of Battal just don't worry about it and simply know that every day is 400 Elim, and for some reason everyone's watches and sundials seem to work right.

Battal years last from 175 days in the Slippery Years to 507 days in the Scratchy Years.
