Epic Fantasy Warrior Quest XVI: Rebels of the Ominous Judgekings

The sixteenth and most recent game in the award-winning Epic Fantasy Warrior Quest videogame franchise. So far the highest grossing PS3 exclusive title on both sides of the Pacific. The game blows out the well known "hyper-real" visual art style on the next-gen hardware, but failed to deliver the much lauded online content swapping system, the game instead shipped entirely without online support.

On December 14th, 2007, it was announced that Rebels of the Ominous Judgekings would be ported to the XBox 360. This announcement was released in tandem with the announcement that the EFWQ XVIII: Metropolis of the Antisocial Gems production team had shifted platforms to the Wii in an attempt to "lower costs and exploit the franchise by appealing to casual gamers." The decision to end Rebels of the Ominous Judgekings' platform exclusivity has been cited as a concession to XBox 360 fans who were anxious for an EFWQ title on their platform and would understandably be whipped into a murderous fanboy rage by the news that the next installment would instead be released on the most popular next-gen console in Japan--the Nintendo Wii. Cube-phonics alleged "Nihon-centric outlook" has, predictably, created a major stir in the fan community, who feel that the lower-resolution graphics of the Wii will not constitute a "true sequel" to Rebels of the Ominous Judgekings; this only adds fuel to the fire created when it was announced that one of the numbered sequels would be released exclusively to handheld platforms.

Story

The story is set during the reign of King Blontyak and begins in the city of Ferngravellia. The main character is a young man named Mett, a Brewer in the employ of the local high-regent in Ferngravellia. He accidentally accepts a mission commissioned by King Blontyak into darkest Grammelgrap. Mett finds that in his party is the Kings own son Yockleblont, a headstrong but charming young man who had volunteered for the mission. Mett and Yockleblont travel together, picking up more companions both intentionally and not. It isn't until they reach Grammelgrap that Mett has the courage to correct the misunderstanding that led people to believe that he was qualified for this mission. At that point it was decided that Mett had properly proven himself brave and resourceful in battle and the party decided to forge on with their mission. Soon after that, in the first hard battle the group would face, it would be revealed how wrong that was.

Just inside the lands of Grammelgrap, the party encounters a band of sorcerials, and the prince is killed in the ensuing fight, the rest of the party barely escaping with their lives. Returning defeated to Ferngravellia, it is then that Mett begins to find out the plot into which he had been drawn. Many players assumed that after the death of Yockleblont, about 20 hours into the game, that they must be nearing the end, but in fact after this sequence the players see the opening credits of the game and several new mechanics are unlocked, followed by about 60 hours of gameplay.

Gameplay

A realtime battle system, somewhat Zelda-esque, but with a squad based tactics element and a "quick pause" system that can be enabled to make the game not-entirely unlike Knights of the Old Republic. There are large sections that rely heavily on combat, but there are also hours at a stretch where the game will essentially boil down to a string of fairly creative mini-games based on classic arcade games puntuated by shopping for upgraded equipment and the occasional cut-scene. Gone are the concept of upgradable jobs or dynamic character advancement seen in previous iterations of the game.. although Yargo does have the ability to "completely reconfigure himself" allowing the player to re-design any aspect of the appearance of that character throughout the game.

  • Sire Tucken: Grand Satrap, visiting dignitary who begins traveling with the party for protection after they save him from an apparent assassination attempt.
  • Go Lung: Gaysha infatuated with Mett -- turns out to be on a mission to assassinate Sire Tucken
  • Yargo Garrok: a brash young Kwaq, in constant conflict with Nurd
  • Godric Potatamus: Vegimancer - optional party member. defects from Lord Gravy's Black Guard if properly lured

  • Lord Gravy - Corrupt Sancturion elder bent on betraying the civilized realms to the evil and ambious high lord of the Gorthmaugs for personal gain
  • Sehr Grayg - Wise old Yarnsmith who is a careful observer of hidden patterns behind political goings on. sees all and despenses wisdom in cryptic rhyme
  • Black Gaurd - Lord Gravy's personal army of Vegemancers
  • Mezzer Smith - Space Delver on the run for a crime he did not commit

Trivia

Rumors abound that there is a path through the game where Yockleblont does not die, but this has yet to be confirmed.
