Epic Fantasy Warrior Quest III: Assault on Moondale

Also known as Wizbits Worlds III: Pantheon of Nogodniks in America, was the third installment of the Epic Fantasy Warrior Quest franchise, released in January of 1988.

Story

Taking 100 years after Epic Fantasy Warrior Quest I, the evil bovine sorcerial known as Peon attacks the peaceful country of Moondale, causing the entire army to wet themselves and flee in shame. With only the inexperienced Prince Lolo left standing, he is sent forward to rescue his siblings - Princess Lola and Prince Alo to gather them together and repel the invasion of Moondale..

Gameplay

This installment scaled back the number of playable characters to three, under the explanation that everyone else but the royalty of the world had been turned into helpless peasants. It is the first game in the series in which more than two monsters can be fought at a time, sending never-ending hordes of enemies at the player at each turn. The perspective also changed to that of first person throughout the game, making it somewhat hard to navigate - particularly in mazes.

The game was notable for allowing saving only after playing a complex minigame called "Fluddle's Stackum" - which was later released as a popular online flash game.

Characters

Party Members

  • Prince Lolo: A short and tubby prince who is good at combat, but lacks the Knack for any sort of supernatural powers.
  • Princess Lola: A powerful Elemenstor.
  • Prince Alo: A crappy Elemenstor.

Other Characters

  • Peon: The evil bovine who wishes to destroy Moondale. (Spoiler: And Lolo's true father!)
  • D'urge: A 40-year old man who believes he is a fairy, and hands out maps to people who "dance" with him.
  • D'mani: The ghost of a Shushipodian musician who appears to give advice via poor rock music.
  • Rhedsh't: A soldier briefly controlled in the introduction.

Trivia

  • The save feature was totally absent in the Japanese version, requiring players to very carefully write down every thing they had done in the game in real life, and then carefully key it back in when they wanted to resume their play.
  • The North American version also has a lengthly introduction featuring a playable soldier character who dies 10 minutes into the game and is replaced by Prince Lolo.
