Duane
Some say the most unlikely of figures to shape the events of The Burnten'ed Times was not Propitious Opportune, nor even his squire Garvey...
Aend younge Propitious sayd to his frynde, Garvey, "Frynde Garvey, you must join me, for I am in dyrest needing of companions to fyghte the evil
Rhaja Lord. Do you possesse anye weapones for the waging of greate battles and warres?"
To whyche Garvey replied, "Only thyse rusten'ed lance, Mr. Propitious... but I daryest not to be usening it, what ferr the tyrrible squeaken'ing it doth make."
Both Garvey and Propitious nearly jumpen'ed out of thyrre skinne when the lance squake farth in protesten'ing:
"Squeaken'ing? Do not chyden unto me such, young varlets! I am Duane, The Moste Deadlye And Smartyst Of lances, and do not ye arseholders be forgetten'ing it!"
-- Ulfulaz the Historian, Tales of Yorn Appendix D
It was true that Duane was both deadly and wise, though quite old and rusty. So old, that he claimed to have once been wielded by Lord B'gh'd at the ill-fated battle where he fell at the walls of L'fh'ik. He claimed to have forgotten how he ended up underneath a Mud Farmer's floorboards in Portund, as the wake of the Vampyric Wars he said he was: "Quite with an affectioned'ness for drinking and snoggering."
Despite his belligerent nature (and constant referral to Garvey as an "arseholder"), Duane was quite eloquent and crafty, and fooled many denizens of The Shield into believing that Propitious Opportune was a great knight and tactician upon the field of battle. He led Propitious and Garvey upon a three month expedition, known thereafter as Great Journey of Two Months of Great Joinification'ing.
During this Great Journey of Two Months of Great Joinification'ing, a great many allies were acquired to join the fight against the Rhaja Lord and his foul army of Jujufied Creatures:
- Men, from the ruined lands of Portund, Ithbarg, The Kingdom of Yymp and the Arcane Northern Realms
- Eagles from the Highest Eyries of the Low Valleys of Mandleclang
- Skarhs from the Arcane Northern Realms
- several Dwarves from the deep places of Ithbarg II
- "thrice-dozen-twenty" wood-archers from the Arkenvale (future home of the Arkleaf)
- nine shaman Grottolings from the shadowy ruins of The Kingdom of Yymp
- twelve Graha Assassins, who were oddly enough found in Mandleclang
- The Last Thirty Kings of the Lost Kingdom of Morlond's Field
- The Great Heroes, Haul and Gaul, twin minotaur and the last of the wandering Hammer Lords of the Plains.
- S'yrf'yl the Immortal, who for some reason, surprised everyone with his continued existence... even the ragtag band of Ringlings he brought with him. The Ringlings brought That One Ring with them... "Just in case."
- Kroneklieve the Hammer Baron, and his plattoon of Plain Hammerlings from the Nearly Flat Mountains of Urgel. (Their disagreements with the minotaur would sadly lead to the short but destructive Hammer Wars of the early 11,000's).
and last, but very importantly:
As they passed through these lands of The Shield, their army grew, as did their heroic exploits and victories over the minions of the Rhaja Lord (for a detailed account, refer to the Great Journey of Two Months of Great Joinification'ing). When finally all of their forces of the Great Rebellion of the Unified Rebels of the Free Lands of Most of the Shield had been amassed, Duane led them toward the towering Beutrafficades, toward their final conflict...
at the Great Battle of Great Unificationess
(for a more detailed preface to this Epic Battle, refer to the Great Journey of Two Months of Great Joinification'ing)
