Dragons

Bogyn's Nastiness Rating: -28 (Harmless) for Pixlie Dragons and up to 276 (Incomprehensibly Nasty) for a Hoard of Legendary Wraith Dragons which are Harbingers of the End Times

Creature Families: Draconic

Mighty, majestic, and terribly Epic creatures, Dragons come in many forms. All dragons are large reptilian creatures with hard scales. Most dragon types have the following features:

  • Winged
  • Uses shiny things in mating rituals, much like ravens or humans
  • Symbolic of Something

There are a number of different dragons in Battal, but most of them can be separated into two major categories. The Great Dragons are extremely Epic, sentient, and can be considered in many ways, minor Deities. Lesser Dragons are essentially very exotic and dangerous wild animals and sometimes even lack magical properties.

Great Dragons

Great Dragons are distinguishable from their less impressive cousins due to the fact they have all the traits listed above, as well as being:

  • Well Color-Coded (for every dragon slayer convenience!)
  • Filled with Epicness
  • Magical Nature

Some Great Dragons have entered a pact with Dyemons, becoming color-changing dragons, or Dyagons. Scales are used to make Candied Dragon Scales. Great Dragons come in three major classes: Metallic, Jewel, and Monochromatic.

Metallic Great Dragons

Metallic Great Dragons are by far, the most powerful, arrogant, and full-of-it monsters in all of Battal. The Metallic Great Dragons are also some of the oldest creatures in the world. They hate the Monochromatic Great Dragons on general principal, considering them nouveau rich for daring to come into existence 500 days after the first Metallic Great Dragon.

Gold Flying, highly magical in nature. Represents effusive, gaudy, over-the-top goodness and typically claims to be some sort of "dragon royalty." Very social and prone to handing out Epic quests from their mountainside lairs. Ebberontimax the Brilliantly Golden was one Golden Dragon who actually enjoyed shifting to human form to meddle in the affairs of Men, including taking part in the Moonlit Order.
Silver Flying; smaller and swifter than golden dragons but also less magically powerful, except in the element of Stream. Represents humble goodness. Often at odds with blue dragons, as they like to live near the sea.
Bronze Dwells beneath the earth, typically considered an Earth elemental. Does not fly well, but burrows spectacularly.
Platinum Technically more powerful and rare than Gold Dragons, but often confused for Silver, much to their annoyance. Breathes powerful blasts of intense radiation that can cause cancer for generations.
Brass Brass Dragons life in cliffsides and have an impressive metallic sheen. They are feared for their ability to emit pure blasts of destructive Soundwaves.
Iron Iron dragons are actually unusually small, and spot round, rodent-like ears. Their powerful jaw muscles are amongst the most feared maws on Battal. Although they don't have any special elemental abilities, they are by far amongst the most physically powerful creatures known to the universe at large.
Aluminum Aluminum Dragons are one of the few Metallic breeds to live amongst the sea. They emit strange waves of Water energy that affect the tides on a worldwide scale.
Lead A feathered, black, Metallic dragon that has some limited control over Air. However, it is far more durable than many other species of Great Dragon, being able to deflect all but the most Epic damage.
Tin A strange, small, feline-like breed of Great Dragon that is known for unusually high levels of intelligence, as well as Brainmanglement breath.
Mercury As this dragon is liquid, even at room temperature, it is less a dragon and more a shiny puddle that can give you mercury poisoning. Although it is unknown if they are truly alive or not, they have a funny way of ending up people's rectums.
Copper

Monochromatic Great Dragons

Considered the peasants of Great Dragon society, the Monochromatic Dragons are nonetheless the most popular and well-represented of all dragon-kind.

Red Flying and Fire breathing. Represents evil and destruction. It's one of the smallest dragons, but unfortunately for humankind, they fly in herds. (Or hoards, like a dragon hoard)
Green Flying and sort-of asian looking, represents balance and harmony. Tied to element of Life, their breath harms only undead
White Flying and Ice breathing. Represents self assuredness but also occasionally selfishness.
Blue Flightless leviathans, but strong swimmers. Water elemental. Represents the brute force necessary for social order.
Pink May actually be descended from any dragon; these dragons are so-named because their scales haven't grown in, leaving them pink and fleshy. Typically this condition is only exhibited in hatchlings that came too early, as scales are the last thing to develop while still in the shell. However, in rare cases these premature dragonlings will remain scaleless for their entire considerable lifespans. Dragol was one of these; see ElamenSTAR Episode Guide for more information.
Black Large completely black dragons ranging anywhere from 1/2 to 5 clospecscions in length. Black dragons have exceptionally hard scales, strong resistance to spells and gear, extreme speed stealth and cunning. Frequently serve Humble Pie to dragonslayers who think being black makes them evil. However despite their color and a complete indifference to humans, black dragons are greatly beneficial as they tend to eat the very things that eat people. Represents the fact that vicious/dangerous/evil things can be for the greater good.
Yellow Sort of oddly simian in appearence, with eyes on stalks. They are awkward but posess great strength, as well as Lightning breath.
Orange A dragon with a thick, orange tough, pithy skin. Juicy inside, though. One of Battal's richest sources of vitamin C.
Indigo Covered in feathers and with a distinctly avian appearence, they are kind, mysterious, and posess an ability known as Break Wind, which can whip up a hurricane at will.
Purple A very rare species of dragon that breathes out Carry energy that only damages Furniliars and Furniture. It has two heads, but aside from that, looks distinctly like a Nightstand. If a Nightstand were a giant flying reptile, anyways.
Plaid A very confused dragon with a heavy accent. Constantly makes a sound similar to the wheezing of bagpipes. Breathes out a strange mixture of haggis and Alcohol that both intoxicates and nauseates.
Beige Off-white dragons similar to Green, except less powerful. Also, their breath invigorates Furniliars and destroys creations of Carry. Represents the need for the franchise to have a dragon for every Primary Element.
Brown Chunky, slow, frog-like dragons that seem to be comprised of living soil. Often have a myriad of plants growing from their flesh that makes them appear green, causing much confusion. They breathe out gigantic chunks of Earth.

Jewel Dragons

Jewel Dragons are very rare, and are the result of a frowned-upon mating of a Monochromatic Dragon and a Metallic Dragon. Jewel Dragons are as powerful as Metallic dragons, sometimes more so. However, their muddied heritage keeps them excluded from all the cool dragon parties, the racist pricks.

Ruby
Sapphire
Emerald
Diamond A highly impressive crystalized dragon that has some limited control over Timenes. More impressive is its ability to spit out endless barrages of deadly hardened sharpened crystal. The droppings of a Diamond Dragon are amongst the most valued materials on Battal.
Pearl

Lesser Dragons

Lacking sentience, and often magical powers aside from some sort of strange breath or venom, the Lesser Dragons are to dragons what monkeys are to men. Thankfully, they are not known for flinging their own dung, however. While Great Dragons are exceedingly rare, Lesser Dragons are quite common, with at least one inhabiting every single area of Battal. They range from tamable and adorable to ferocious and gigantic. In some territories, entire food chains are comprised of nothing but various species of Lesser Dragons. Lesser Dragons are popular in the Pen and Paper RPG, as they always have some weird characteristic that makes for an interesting encounter, but are recognizable enough not to be unfamiliar to players. This has caused several DMs to overuse them throughout the game's run.

Arrow Small, frog-like amphibious dragons that spit out poisonous spines.
Armored Large, herbivorous dragons covered in heavy spiked bone and horns. Manipulates prey with long prehensile tails.
Bloodshot Easily-angered ebony dragon, notable for its ferocious nature, large size, and glowing red eyes.

Drake A common breed of winged, red, fire-breathing dragon known to terrorize most villages. Nests in inaccessible rocky cliffs and usually takes professional exterminators to drive them away. Also notable for their duck-like bills.
Fartfire Obese, clumsy, balloon-shaped, gas-filled dragons that dwell in swamps and float through the air using blasts of fire from their rectums.
Fisherking River dragon with notable dorsal fins that lures prey to it with a dangling, luminescent horn.
Glacier Lives at the poles, burrowing holes into ice. Feeds on aquatic mammals and stays warm by growing a layer of fat around its body. Primarily swims, but can also fly for short amounts of time. The only Lesser Dragon that can breathe ice.
Fly Four-winged insectoid dragon that buzzes over ponds
Fog Beautiful Plesiosaur-esque freshwater dragons that breathe out thick blankets of fog to obscure its existence so tasty tourists will come to Lochs to hope to catch a glimpse of it. They do, before they are snatched up.
Gargantuan The largest Lesser Dragon capable of flight, typically kidnaps princesses and takes them to lairs for reasons it does not comprehend itself. Feeds on large herbivores it carries away with ease.
Gliding Tiny legless mountain dragons capable of burrowing with shovel-like tails or gliding short distances with flaps of skin.
Great Horned Blue forest dragons with incredibly large pairs of horns. Endangered due to over-hunting, as their horns keep them from maneuvering in the woodlands.
Halberd Metallic dragon able to metamorphose front limbs into a variety of bladed weaponry.
Hopping Vegetation-munching Lanumon dragon with powerful hind legs that allow it to leap like a bunny. Carries its eggs in a pouch and lives in barren areas.
Hydra A many-headed dragon that has fantastic regenerative abilities. Can only be killed by fire.
Iron Giant Gigantic dragon that coats itself in metal it finds to protect itself. Iron Giant corpses are excellent sources of rare metals.
Jabberwocky Goofy, fire-eyed dragon that taunts and confuses its prey with amusing poetry and verse.
Komodo Not as much a dragon as an agressive, dragonlike lizard. They're sometimes nicknamed the peasants of dragonkind.
Lucky Wangese Fury, wingless Wang Kingdom dragons that have the ability to fly by Air Elemanifestation and can bring Luck to people at will.
Maneater A large striped dragon that is the only species to prefer Men as food, as opposed to easier sources. Very dangerous, but nearly extinct due to constant conflict between it and its prey.
Moon Six-winged ivory furry dragons that can manipulate Gravity and are raised as steeds for the Lanumon Royal Family.
Northern Eggbandit Egg-eating, peaceful dragon that lives on northern beaches.
Orochi An eight-headed gigantic alcoholic dragon that breathes out clouds of pure Ayle.
Peanut Flying and commonly believed to be fire breathing. The Peanut dragon in fact breaths a concentrated peanut oil which is highly flammable. Represents the need for authors to have plot devices.
Pixlie Much like Pixlies, these dragons are naturally fun, glowing and amusing fairy creatures.
Pteroid Bat-like dragon made of stone that dwells in the roofs of caverns, feeding on fungus.
Pugface Medium-sized black and white dragons with bulging eyes, giant ears, and a boxy face. Shy around humans. Feeds on small mammals such as mice and rabbits.
Pygmy Insectivorous purple dragons the size of chickens. Are harmless unless hunting in groups, in which case they may attack people.
Screech A crested, legless dragon that scares away predators with a supersonic scream.
Sea Serpent A large, elongated aquatic dragon found in the depths of the oceans.
Terrapin Forest-dwelling tortoise dragon that breathes out hallucinogenic gases. Popular with High-Elves.
Twinheaded Two-headed, wingless dragon that preys primarily on livestock around mountains.
Solar A winged dragon that suns itself on rocks and breathes out beams of intensified sunlight.
Wang Dancer Lion-like Wangese breed of dragon notable for its crimson mane and elaborate dancing. Dwells in lake beds and can be bribed into following instructions.
Wyrm In some depictions: Disgusting insectoid dragons with hundreds of legs and acidic spit.
Wyvern Two-legged, two-winged, avian dragons the size of large hawks, with similar habits and habitats. Claws drip a slightly paralyzing venom.

Other Dragons

These dragons can't rightly be associated with the two main divisions of dragons, and should be considered the freaks and outcasts of dragon evolution.

Wraith Immortal dragons of virtually unlimited destructive power unleashed from the Nastier Planes during The Sundering. However, most were defeated soon after coming to Battal by beings from other planes, most notably CENRAs. The defeated wraith dragons spend their time possessing one host after another. Tied to Carry element.
Quasar Not really dragons at all, though arguably a kind of subspecies as they are reportedly descended from Impera the Star Dragon, a goddess who is depicted as a black, white, or black and white dragon.
Burnanitors A vicious type of dragon that regularly sacks villages and kills peasants. Sometimes confused as to whether it is a man, man-dragon, dragon-man, or just a dragon.
Zombie The Zombified remains of any non-immortal dragon.

Peculiar Dragons

Some crossbreed dragons exist that have mixed characteristics of the primary dragon types. Perhaps the claws and snout tip of a Peanut Dragon, but green otherwise. Such dragons are referred to as Calico Dragons**. The most famous of these was the white and red Izalrave the Calico Dragon who lived at the top of Mount Windice.
