Doppelgangers

Doppelgangers are a race of people led by the evil Queen Dopplepopolus. Their natural form is that of a monkey wrench, but they are able to take on the form of any creature for short periods of time. Eventually, this becomes too difficult to maintain and they revert to their natural form, depicted here.

The Dopplegangers were instrumental in the Not Really That Secret War, both for their shapechanging abilities and their handiness with the plumbing.

The first attempt to fight the Doppelganger were the unsucessfull Troplegangers, who would could take the form of any Doppelgager at will. This only added to the confusion of the time.

The downfall of the Doppelgangers was due to the creation of the secret phrase, eliminating any chances they had at subterfuge. Doppelgangers were most deadly when a given party was split -- for who knows who truly returns from the shadows? The supposed Doppelganger would be given the word "Crash!", and the correct reply would be "Thunder!" (or maybe "Lightning!", no one ever really remembered.)

First implemented by the Death Elemenstor Fulgstor'd Yyyrysssla, who was indeed very sneaky.

Not to be confused with Doppleganger or Duplicatar.

*note that some radical contemporary intellects argue that the Doppelgangers may have found out the secret code, and still pose a threat, as the same two (or three, depending on your mood) words were always used. This seems very unlikely, though, as people knew never to use the code around any nearby monkey wrenches or toolsheds.

*note, also, that Doppelgangers (according to opposing radical contemporary intellects)may not actually exist outside of being normal monkey wrenches, and just be an excuse for murdering people. This seems very unlikely, though, as it's not very possible someone would have anything against monkey wrenches, unless they actually were Doppelgangers, since monkey wrenches can be very useful and no one would prosper from being suspicious of them.
