Doodle
Doodle is a character in The Wizbits cartoon that appeared briefly as a replacement for Skip during season 2.
It is an oft forgotten fact, usually thanks to some degree of effort on the part of the person who manages to forget it, that for Season 2 of Wizbits Skip was briefly replaced. The original Japanese animators, having discovered the popularity of their show in the West, decided to replace the most 'Japanese' of their creations with a more generic character. Thus Skip was replaced with the much-reviled Doodle, a character whose basic premise was that he travelled Battal drawing crude pictures of other people's familiars (or indeed in some cases their furniliars). A character with a distinctly Western flair, Doodle was often given bizarre throwaway lines designed to make the series seem less overtly foreign.
Presented as an already established character, Doodle's origin story was thankfully never disclosed. On rec.arts.elothtes, a 65,000-word work of fan fiction was presented that explained Doodle's origin: according to the author (who had never posted anything before and would never post anything again), Doodle was the reincarnation of Harbinger Portent, who was also apparently the son of Yeoman Rand from Star Trek and the clone of Harry Potter. There was also something about Paul Bunyan and possibly Brad from the Rocky Horror Picture Show. It wasn't very good, frankly, and nobody ever figured out why the author cared so much about a throwaway character like that, especially when the cartoon is so rich with interesting themes to talk about. Certain conspiracy theorists believe that it was written by Tycho Brahe, but the absence of misspellings suggests otherwise.
Having proved less popular with the kids than even the hardcore fans Doodle was rapidly ret-conned out of existence. Because he was created specifically for the western audience, Doodle never appeared in the original Japanese series (see ElamenSTAR). And because he only appeared in The Wizbits Cartoon, Doodle is not generally considered canonical in either licensed or unlicensed material.

Some believe that the decision to bring Skip back was actually the result of an internet petition by hardcore fans. If true, this would mark the first time an internet petition was ever successful. |
