Chez Lounges About All Day (家具は血の勝利で燃える)

Super ElamenSTAR Episode 407

Aired 6th November, 1999

Summary

The previous episode ends in a cliffhanger, with Zula relaxing on the dreaded Comfortable-Looking Sofa. Exhausted from the work of gathering furniture for the Citadel, she actually falls asleep on the dreaded surreptitious seating. Just as she begins to squirm uncomfortably, Montgomery Sofa comes galloping through the door shouting, "Mistress Zula, no!"

Attracted by the commotion, new arrival Fenn the Stool rushes in and sees, to his horror, that the most nimble and agile of the High Elemenstors is sleeping on a piece of furniture which will undoubtedly cause back strain. He rushes to find help, only to discover that the Comfortable-Looking Sofa is the least of the Citadel's problems!

Armchair Mindsmiths and a legion of their bound slaves are at the gates! Their brethren, the Raging Recliners are actively attempting to breach the defensive barriers while Phila desperately tries to wake Lander, who at the invitation of a familiar pink mattress salesman has fallen asleep on the Too Soft Mattress. And Wendel is nowhere to be found...

"It's up to us furniliars to save the Citadel!" cries Fenn. He quickly organizes a counteroffensive, pushing back the would-be invaders.

Meanwhile, Montgomery Sofa manages to transfer Zula to his own healing cushions while Phila, King Dosunk, and several students carefully extricate an aching Lander from the cursed mattress. Wendel emerges from the Citadel's depths wearing only a towel, a young female student (also in a towel) on his arm, and demands to know what is going on. Fenn reports that the castle is under attack, and that while the furniliars are holding back the invaders, they won't last much longer...

Lander pats Fenn on the top and thanks him for his work. "We'll take it from here," he says with a menacing smile. "Grand Elemenstors... let's kick it into overgear."

Notes

The ending battle scene is one of the few truly Epic battles in season four, which many critics have called "too episodic, too anemic." Perhaps the most memorable scene is of Wendel, clad only in a towel, standing unharmed atop enormous piles of burning furnitue and laughing maniacally.

Much of the surreptitious seating depicted in this episode appears later (in the Battal timeline), so instead of perishing in Wendel's fires, the Comfortable-Looking Sofa and Too Soft Mattress are shown getting pushed out a second-story window. Presumably such furniture could cushion its own fall, and thus survive the battle.

For his bravery and demonstrated leadership, Fenn the Stool is made chief hall monitor of the Cerulean Citadel.

"Well, once the halls are finished, anyhow," adds Phila apologetically.

Comments

Kenneth Pike Does anyone know the story behind the titles? The official romanized title is definitely the pun, "Chez Lounges About All Day." But when I translate the Japanese title, it's something like "The Furniture Burns in Bloody Victory" or some such. I know the Season 4 titles aren't always spot-on translations, but this one doesn't even come close.
