Boots of Exceeding Comfort
The Boots of Exceeding Comfort are comfortable, very comfortable, some might say exceedingly comfortable boots. Walking around in this prime pair of footwear feels as though one is treading barefoot across an endless field of bunnies and baby geese, even while wearing the heaviest of armors.
The Boots are crafted from a rich brown leather that never seems to crack, and cleans easily. They are well cut and assuredly stylish, a point often emphasized by their owner, Crisis, throughout the ELotH comic book.
Crisis was well-served by the Boots of Exceeding Comfort, considering he spent the large majority of his time traipsing about Battal in his secure but sometimes unwieldy Quilder Studded Leather Set. He first acquired the Boots in Roundabout Dragons, the fourth issue of the comic. However, although Crisis frequently pointed out their comfort and snazzy appearance, they were not significant to the series before the final few issues.
In issue #33, The Journey of a Thousand Miles, the Boots of Exceeding Comfort greatly aided Crisis as he traveled with his companions to Choxo Town to confront Char Reyarteb and his dark army, allowing him to help his friends along as they grew weary from the forced march. However, just two issues later in Choxo Town at Last!, when Crisis finds himself unable to break through the wall of foes holding him back from his wounded friends, he comes to a stunning realization played out in a gripping internal struggle:
“What's holding me back? Of course! The Boots! I've basked in their fuzzy bunny comfort for so long that I've forgotten how to fend for myself. It's been tough up until now, sure, but not like this; this is the real thing. But the Boots, how could I ever live down the loss of style? How could I face the harsh world of polishing and wear-and-tear? NO! My friends are counting on me now, and I'll be damned if I'm going to let them down. This is no time for doubts, Crisis! It's time... to stand on my own two feet.”
After this, he rips the Boots from his feet, socks and all, and hurls them at the nearest foe. Since he hadn't taken them off in such a long time and the Boots no longer had an owner to comfort, the resulting stench is unbearable to his foes, who quickly set about destroying the boots and trampling the shredded bits beneath the dirt. Crisis is able to use the distraction to his advantage and pierce through their defenses, cleaving a heroic path to his friends as Char Reyarteb's army closes around them. Unfortunately, Char then unleashes a blast of Dark Elemenstation that turns the companions to stone.
