The Black Monolith

The Black Monolith is a perfectly matte black slab of unknown material, its dimensions a perfect 1 by 4 by 9 (the squares of 1, 2, and 3). It was discovered standing upright in the middle of a desert surrounded by the ancient skeletons of a number of apes, all with cracked skulls, and a thigh bone which was found flung considerable distance away.

The Black Monolith was first discovered by a passing caravan of traders, who noticed that their compasses were swinging wildly. They stopped and dug at the spot of greatest disturbance, and eventually unearthed the mysterious object. When they touched it for the first time it lit up with a psychaedelic display of flashing lights and sparkles. They managed to load the surprisingly-heavy Black Monolith on to one of their beasts of burden and took it to Harbinger Portent, the greatest Elemenstor of the age, but it would not repeat its earlier display. Harbinger Portent declared it to be "boring" and had it dumped at sea, never to be seen again.

Tales that the Black Monolith being connected to an advanced undersea civilization of sentient octopi that later quickly sprung up should be regarded as nothing more than rumors. Or so claim the octopi.
